Parts For Your Very Own AR

The AR 15 is a popular rifle among many gun owners and shooters. Not only is it easy to tinker with and learn, especially if you get your own AR 15 kit, but it is also fun to shoot! The first time I shot an AR 15, I was visiting my cousin in Pueblo, Colorado. Her boyfriend was in the army and they had recently gone to purchase handguns for each of them. My cousin chose a pink gun, while her boyfriend chose a standard black one. On my third day there, we planned a trip to a shooting range about an hour south of Pueblo. As we were packing the car, her boyfriend went into the room I was sleeping in and walked back into the living room holding a large box. In that box was an AR 15.

I remember going to an outdoor shooting range in Kansas with my grandfather when I was a kid. I have plenty of pictures from my mom of me holding a handgun and getting prepared to shoot, with large earmuffs over my ears. In one of those photos, I am standing next to my brother and my grandfather, posing with a rifle in a grey sweatshirt my mother bought with the American Flag embroidered on the front. I don’t particularly remember shooting that rifle, and I’m sure it wasn’t an AR 15; however, I do remember kneeling on the ground, my grandfather standing behind me, with a large shotgun resting on the plastic folding table in front of me. My grandfather had warned me to not put my face behind the buttstock, but instead rest the buttstock against my shoulder and be prepared for recoil. Little did I know what this recoil would be like. I shot the gun and wham! Down I went, falling back onto the ground behind me. While that was fun, I decided I would wait a few more years until I shot something like that again.

Going back to Colorado, when we arrived at the shooting range, I was a little wary at giving the AR 15 a try. I didn’t want to bruise my shoulder. However, I was reassured that, while it was heavy, the AR had little recoil behind it. So, I gave it a try. As it turns out, they were right. For a heavy rifle, the AR 15 packs the lightest punch. I took a shot and although I did have to plant my feet firmly into the ground, my shoulder never got hurt and I let off quite a few more rounds. It was a fun experience, for sure, and definitely something I would not be hesitant to try again.
