Water safety for Dogs: Tips and Tricks

 

Swimming can be an exercise filled with fun and frolic for your beloved fur baby. It is the best way your pupper and you can bond in the hot weather amidst the cool water. Most dogs don’t really need to be taught how to swim. They are born swimmers! While some dogs may have their inhibitions about swimming, you could always train them to waddle along with you!

No matter where you take your dog to swim, there are a few ground rules you must always keep in mind. Be it swimming in pools or even short dips amidst nature at Alberta’s iconic lakes and rivers, there are a few safety tips you must keep in mind for your puppers wellbeing.

The first swim

When you first take your dog for a swim, it’ll help you understand how your pup feels about the ordeal, and whether or not he can actually swim.

In such cases, you might have to teach him the basics, for this it is extremely important for you to be in the water, by his side, with his leash still on him. Try choosing a quiet, shallow and secluded spot for his first swimming lesson.

Remember never to pressurize your dog while doing any new activity. This will help create a stress-free environment and ensure safety.

Safety Tips to keep in mind

• If you have a pool at home or are visiting a public pool, make sure that you teach your dog how to get in and out safely. Make sure that he has some way he can get out safely, either by stairs or with the help of a ramp.

• Always check the temperature of the water before letting you dog splash around.

• If you’re taking your dog out on a trip to the deeper ends of a river or lake, make sure that he’s wearing a life jacket or vest.

• If the current of a river is strong, do not take your dog on a swim, it can be a risk to both of your lives.

• Make sure the water is clean, litter, garbage or even algae in water bodies can severely harm your fur buddy.

• Always keep an eye on your bud to make sure he isn’t going too far or isn’t facing any difficulties. Never leave him alone while swimming, even if he is in your own swimming pool.

• Make sure you wash and dry him clean after a swim in natural bodies of water to make sure that he doesn’t get infected.

• Make sure he doesn’t consume the water that he’s swimming in. This can lead to severe health issues especially since the water is not potable or treated.

• Cover your pool or build a fence around it to avoid any accidents or possible drowning.

These are a few tips you must keep in mind to ensure water safety for your canine, when he is ready to take a leap into the water.
